WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Park Service is in the early stages of gathering ideas and comments for a new memorial in Washington that has been proposed to honor the Peace Corps and its founding ideals.
The park service is working with the Peace Corps Commemorative Foundation to examine the potential impacts of creating the new memorial. Several locations have been identified near the Capitol, along Pennsylvania Avenue and near Rock Creek Park as potential sites for the memorial.
The park service has planned a public meeting to gather comments on Oct. 23. Comments can also be submitted online as part of the environmental assessment process until Nov. 11.
Once a site is selected, the Peace Corps foundation would design and build the memorial, and the park service would be responsible for maintenance.
