TRIANGLE, Va. (AP) — The National Museum of the Marine Corps is dedicating a monument to 17 New York City firefighters and Marines who perished in the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.
The Fire Department of New York branch of the Marine Corps Association is holding the event Sunday at the museum in Triangle, Va., just outside Marine Corps Base Quantico.
Organizers say the monument includes a piece of steel retrieved from the wreckage of the World Trade Center after two hijacked jetliners crashed into the twin towers on Sept. 11, 2001.
The association says 343 New York City firefighters died that day, and 17 of them were also Marines.
