STAUNTON, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police are investigating what led to a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred during a traffic stop on Interstate 64.
Officials say the incident took place after a Virginia State Police trooper stopped a Ford Windstar minivan along I-64 in Augusta County at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver displayed a firearm. Just as the trooper retreated to his patrol car to take cover, a female juvenile passenger jumped out of the minivan screaming.
Shots were then fired by both the driver and the trooper. The adult male driver died at the scene. Neither the officer nor the juvenile was injured.
Officials say the driver’s name, as well as additional details are expected to be released Friday.
