WASHINGTON – A Maryland mother accused of suffocating her two young children has been indicted on two murder charges.
A Prince George’s County grand jury returned the indictment, which was announced Thursday. Sonya Spoon, of Cheverly, is also charged with two counts each of first-degree assault, first-degree child abuse and second-degree assault.
Spoon is accused of placing plastic bags over the heads of her children, 22-month-old Ayden and 3-year-old Kayla, and then secured the bags with duct tape, suffocating them in September. She was arrested on initial charges of murder that same day and was soon after moved to a state psychiatric hospital.
She had waived her Miranda rights and provided a detailed statement to police.
Spoon successfully won a custody battle with the father of her daughter, Kayla, earlier this year.
Spoon remains in custody and no new court dates have been set.
