Western Carolina beats Brevard 45-21

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Darius Ramsey ran for three touchdowns as Western Carolina beat Brevard College 45-21 on Saturday.

Ramsey scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and another shortly before halftime. He and Detrez Newsome both finished with 88 yards. The Catamounts (1-1) had 283 rushing yards.

Troy Mitchell completed 13 of 15 passes for 142 yards and ran for 84 yards.

After jumping to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, the Catamounts continued to dominate in the second with rushing touchdowns by Ramsey and Newsome. Western Carolina led 28-14 at the break.

With the Catamounts leading 28-21 late in the third quarter, Newsome took the ball 33 yards for a touchdown, ending the Tornados’ hopes for a fourth-quarter comeback. A field goal by Richard Sigmon and a 2-yard touchdown run by Shawn Warren and sealed the outcome.

The Tornados (0-1) had 278 yards on the ground but only 18 passing.
