Stocks break losing streak…Oil prices continue to drop…Nevada lawmakers consider Tesla deal

NEW YORK (AP) — The Dow and the S&P 500 have broken a two-day losing streak. The Dow gained nearly 55 points on Wednesday, closing at 17,068.71. The S&P rose 7.25 points to 1,995.69. The Nasdaq also made gains, closing up 34 points at 4,586.52. Apple drove the S&P and the Nasdaq’s advance. It’s the largest component of both indexes, and it gained more than 3 percent, closing at $101 per share.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Asian stocks erased gains and European markets are lower today. Japanese stocks rose as the yen resumed its fall against the U.S. dollar. And Wall Street is headed for a weak start. Both S&P 500 and Dow Jones futures fell 0.3 percent.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The price of oil continues to drop, and it’s been heading down again in today’s trading. Benchmark U.S. crude for October delivery dropped $1.08 to settle at $91.67 on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Labor Department will release the jobless claims number for last week and Freddie Mac will report the weekly mortgage rates today. Also the Treasury Department will release the federal budget for August.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The Nevada Assembly is expected to formally begin debate on the biggest piece of a package of up to $1.3 billion in incentives to bring Tesla Motors’ $5 billion battery factory to the state. Critics say lawmakers are gambling with taxpayers’ money, but they were in the minority Wednesday and concede it would be difficult to block the legislation. Gov. Brian Sandoval says the factory could bring more than 20,000 jobs to Nevada over 20 years.
