WASHINGTON – Police say that a report of a person brandishing a weapon, which forced all Alexandria city schools to take extra security precautions earlier this week, was unfounded.
Alexandria police said Thursday that the report of a person with a weapon toward Maury Elementary School Tuesday was false based on their investigation.
First Maury, then the remainder of the city’s public schools were placed on “lock-in,” while police searched for the person. Classes continued as normal inside the locked buildings. Schools were dismissed at the normal time and police assisted during dismissal at Maury.
“Given the number of weapons violations that occur at schools across the nation, the police department takes reports of this nature seriously and responds accordingly,” according to a department statement.
