UPDATE Tuesday 9:20 p.m.: D.C. police say the body of a man found Saturday in Chillum, Maryland, is “believed to be that of” former city treasurer Lasana Mack.
Mack worked for the District for decades and was the city’s treasurer for seven years. He most recently worked as the executive director of a nonprofit in the city.
Friends tell WTOP Mack was a community oriented, dedicated person. They say he was last seen near his home in the Brookland neighborhood of Northeast D.C.
Police say they’re waiting on the autopsy from the Prince Georges County medical examiner to confirm the body’s identity, but they believe it’s his.

WASHINGTON — The Metropolitan Police Department is asking for the public’s help locating a “critical missing person” identified as former D.C. Treasurer, Lasana K. Mack, 51.
Mack was last seen on Saturday, Sept. 13, near his home in the 2200 block of Taylor Street, Northeast.
Mack worked for District government for decades. He is currently the executive director of Appeal Inc., a nonprofit that promotes economic empowerment and African American cultural literacy.
His mother also worked for the District and once served as budget director.
Friends describe Mack as a gentle spirit who was community-oriented, reliable and well-organized.
He is described as a black man who is about 5-foot-10. He weighs 195 pounds, has brown eyes, a medium brown complexion and is bald.
The police have no clothing description to provide at this time but say he may be driving a gray 2013 Ford Explorer bearing DC tags EE-8080.
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Mack is asked to call the Metropolitan Police Department at 202-727-9099, Youth Investigations Branch at 202-576-6768, or 911.
Friends and family are beginning to mobilize to spread the word and help the search for Mack. And a Facebook page related to his disappearance has been established.
