ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — The Arlington County Board has voted to install video cameras on school buses to catch drivers who pass stopped buses as they pick up or drop off children.
The board unanimously approved the measure at its Tuesday meeting. It will go into effect Feb. 1 to give county officials time to develop policies on the capture, storage and access to the videos.
The board says Arlington police estimate they’ve issued about 700 citations in the past five years for drivers who’ve passed stopped school buses. The measure is designed to cut down on that number.
The board says that once the cameras are installed, video of suspected violations will be sent to Arlington police. If a violation is confirmed, the department will mail a $250 citation to the vehicle’s owner.
