Many Hampton Roads E-ZPass accounts lack funds

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — Many E-ZPass holders who use the Downtown or Midtown tunnels in Hampton Roads don’t have enough money in their accounts to pay the tolls.

The tunnels’ operator, Elizabeth River Crossings, tells The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/1sjKMEm ) that E-ZPass account holders make about 72,000 average daily trips. Nearly 6,000 of these trips are made on accounts with insufficient funds.

About 1 in 3 E-ZPass accounts in Hampton Roads are manually replenished. Ninety-two percent of accounts in the rest of Virginia allow the state to charge a credit card if funds are insufficient.

Elizabeth River Crossings spokeswoman Leila Rice says the company will resubmit a toll to the state E-ZPass system for payment if an account has insufficient funds. A bill with a higher toll will be generated if the account still lacks funds.
