Economic woes continued in Argentina last week as workers for the U.S. company R.R. Donnelley & Sons printing plant were left without a job. A ray of hope came from San Lorenzo, Pope Francis’ favorite soccer team, as it defeated Uruguay’s Nacional 2-1 on aggregate to win the Copa Libertadores title for the first time.
The Panama Canal celebrated its 100th birthday amid rising concerns over the waterway’s delayed expansion. Ecuador’s capital, Quito, was struck by several low magnitude earthquakes, which caused some damage and panic.
Haiti was rocked by protests as supporters of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide blockaded the street in front of his home amid fears he could face arrest. Haiti also arrested some of the escaped criminals who made a mass breakout from a prison outside the Haitian capital.
Brazilian presidential candidate Eduardo Campos died in an airplane accident. In Havana, Fidel Castro celebrated his 88th birthday.
