As the time draws near for the General Services Administration to reveal which properties will be considered as the possible new home for the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s headquarters, it’s becoming clear security is going to be a major concern. GSA officials reviewing the various candidates have been emphasizing the 350-foot setback requirement in their discussions with groups promoting a particular site, The Washington Post reported.
It has already been presumed the large land requirement ruled out some possibilities, like Poplar Point. Now the assertion of the importance of the setback could bring new potential sites to the forefront. One such possibility is the Exxon-Mobil campus in Fairfax now for sale.
In addition, sources are telling The Post GSA is taking a close look at two large parcels within the District: The eastern half of the former Walter Reed Army Hospital and the Armed Forces Retirement Home. A nod to either would put many wheels in motion. The District is already on a path for reuse of Walter Reed and the Armed Forces Retirement Home is also in the middle of a discernment process for its assets.
