WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) — The Maryland State Police are investigating as a hate crime graffiti on a former military building proposed as housing for immigrant children in Westminster.
Saturday night or early Sunday, someone spray-painted the former Army Reserve Center with this message: “NO ILLEAGLES HERE NO UNDOCUMENTED DEMOCRATS.”
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services considered using the center for children who cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally, but told local officials Saturday they had dropped the idea.
Lt. Patrick McCrory, commander of the state police’s Westminster barrack, told the Carroll County Times (http://bit.ly/1qB5gGa ) that police don’t have suspects or witnesses. He says police may get leads from someone who starts bragging about what happened.
Hate crimes are a misdemeanor punishable by up to three years in a prison and a $5,000 fine.
