WASHINGTON– Looking for a place to indulge in the final day of the World Cup with hundreds of fellow fans? Cities and neighborhoods all over the WTOP listening area are shutting down streets and courtyards to make it a memorable, communal event.
The final championship game between Argentina and Germany begins at 3 p.m. and will be aired on ABC.
The German and Argentinian embassies are co-hosting a free party in the enclosed courtyard at the National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum at 8th and F Streets NW in D.C.
Meanwhile the City of Fairfax, Va., is closing North Street in Old Town to make room for live music, a beer garden, food vendors and of course, the game. The “Fan Fest Party” is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
The Washington Post warns that some of the watering holes that were popular viewing spots throughout the World Cup might be closed for private parties Sunday. They include: Redline, Penn Social and Del Campo. The Goethe-Institut reportedly has a conflict with the Capital Fringe Festival. More info on the bar scene, here.
There are big screen parties as well in downtown Silver Spring, Md., and at Strawberry Park in Merrifield, Va.
And fans looking to soak in views of the Potomac can head over to National Harbor to watch the broadcast on its 32-foot LCD screen. DC Magazine editor Mike McCarthy, in a recent Skype interview with WTOP, said there was plenty of opportunity to watch the game in summer style. “Just bring in lawns chairs and picnic to take in the magic.”
