WASHINGTON — The Anne Arundel County Police say a Maryland Mass Transit Administration (MTA) police officer shot and killed a woman at the Cromwell Light Rail Station in Glen Burnie Saturday night.
Investigators say the MTA police officer Tracy Turpin, a three-year veteran of the force, was flagged down by two people at the station’s bus loop shelter at about 6:30 p.m. They asked the officer to intervene with another individual, a female, who was also inside of the bus loop shelter. The officer attempted to speak to woman, but the woman reportedly began to assault the officer, choking her and pulling her hair.
The officer could not break free, even while several witnesses unsuccessfully attempted to help get the woman off of her, according to police. Police identified the suspect Sunday at 38-year-old Angela Beatrice Randolph of no fixed address.
The officer, “in fear for her life, was able to remove her service weapon and fire one shot, striking the suspect in her upper leg area. There was only one round fired,” according to the police release.
Both the suspect and the officer were transported to local hospitals. The suspect was pronounced deceased and there is no more information about the cause of her death. The officer is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
MTA Police Chief Chief John Gavrilis and Anne Arundel County Police Chief Kevin Davis spoke and agreed “it was best for the investigation to be handled by the Anne Arundel County Police Department, but the agencies will be working in a collaborative effort.”
Turpin was treated and released. She will be placed on routine administrative duties.
