RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — An annual statewide effort is under way to refresh and maintain over 58,000 lane miles of pavement markings in Virginia.
The state Department of Transportation has begun the campaign to brighten white and yellow pavement markings on state-maintained roadways.
Officials say the effort keeps the pavement markings clearly visible to guide motorists in all weather conditions.
The department says motorists rely on pavement markings to define travel lane and roadway boundaries. Pavement markings also communicate information about upcoming traffic patterns, such as pedestrian crosswalks, lane assignments or a stop sign.
