DOSWELL, Va. (AP) — The Civil War Trust is in the stretch run to complete a $3.1 million national fundraising campaign to preserve 665 acres from the May 1864 battle of North Anna.
The trust says the objective of the campaign is to capture the entire combat area of Jericho Mill, which includes the ruins of the mill and land on both banks of the North Anna River. Part of the Battle of North Anna, more than 1,000 casualties occurred at Jericho.
Historian Douglas Southall Freeman has called the site as one of the most picturesque battlegrounds in Virginia.
The trust said it is using an array of matching grants to complete the purchase. The trust has an Aug. 13 deadline to close on the property.
The final phase of the campaign totals $314,000.
