WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Don Beyer has won a seven-way Democratic congressional primary in Northern Virginia.
Beyer’s victory Tuesday virtually assures that he will be the next congressman from the area, replacing longtime Democratic Rep. Jim Moran in the liberal 8th Congressional District.
The 63-year-old Beyer is well known in the district for his family business Don Beyer Volvo. He served as President Barack Obama’s ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Beyer received key endorsements from several former Obama administration officials.
He defeated two members of the Virginia Legislature, the mayor of Alexandria and three other candidates to win Tuesday’s race.
Moran, a liberal Democrat, is retiring after holding the seat for 24 years.
