WASHINGTON — The World Police and Fire Games, the largest sporting event of its kind, is coming to Fairfax County next summer.
The Olympic-style games will be held over a 10-day period and feature 61 sports, showcasing the athletic abilities of firefighters, police officers, corrections officers and customs agents from around the world.
The 2015 event, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the World Police and Fire Games, will be held June 26 through July 5, and admission will be free to the public.
This July 13, Fairfax County will throw a party of sorts to mark the games being one year away.
“We’re getting ready to gear up for our ‘Year Out Kickoff,'” says Fairfax County Deputy Sheriff Carmela Moon, the manager of ceremonies and special events for the games.
The “Year Out” event, to be held at Reston Town Center, will demonstrate the events slated for the World Police and Fire Games. For example, Moon says, “We’re going to have a K9 demonstration, as well as a motor-cone course.”
The World Police and Fire Games are held every two years. After the 2015 Fairfax games, it’s on to Montreal in 2017 and China in 2019. In 2013, the games were held in Belfast, Ireland.
