WASHINGTON — It’s graduation season and some tech gifts can be the right tools to help graduates watch TV, exercise, cook and communicate.
Dan Ackerman, CNET senior editor, shared some of the things to consider for the tech-savvy graduate on your list.
- Wearable tech. Wearing your technology is all the rage now as smartwatches and fitness trackers become more popular.
One great option is the Jawbone UP24. The device snaps onto the wrist and communicates wirelessly with a smartphone app that can record activity and sleep performance.
The Jawbone UP24 can run between $100 and $200.
- Streaming devices. Companies are rolling out streaming devices that many graduates can enjoy.
“There are so many kids, especially kids who have graduated, who have never had cable. They’re not cord cutters, they are cord never-havers,” Ackerman says.
Some good options include the Amazon Fire TV, which streams Amazon Instant content and support other apps such as Netflix, Hulu Plus and Pandora. The Amazon Fire TV costs about $100.
The streaming devices are becoming a popular trend as more people opt for streaming videos over cable service, Ackerman says.
“I think we could have a whole generation of kids that don’t even know what cable TV is,” Ackerman adds
- Smart appliances. New grads may be new cooks, and some smart appliances can help them excel in the kitchen.
The Bunn MyCafe MCU, which costs between $130 and $240, makes “really cool single-serve cups of coffee,” Ackerman says. The MyCafe uses K-Cup pods or fresh grounds.
Also, many smartphone applications can help walk novice cooks through recipes and store favorites, too.
