OCEAN CITY, Md. — The town of Ocean City is ready for a big Memorial Day weekend — and a long summer loaded with things to do.
Sand pumping’s been done to make the beach bigger.
“So the beach looks absolutely fabulous. It’s a beautiful wide, bright sandy beach and it got finished just in time,” says Mayor Rick Meehan.
In addition, the Ocean City fishing pier, which was damaged by storms earlier this year, has been repaired.
Once again this summer, the city has planned a huge number of free events for visitors to enjoy.
“There’ll be something six nights a week along the boardwalk that’s free entertainment,” Meehan says.
That includes laser light shows, movies, beach bonfires, concerts and fireworks.
The always popular Ocean City Air Show is back June 14-15, featuring the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.
The aircraft fly over the beach and ocean so you don’t have to pay to watch.
Last summer, a tall ship docked in Ocean City and offered tours. It was so popular the city is doing it again.
“There are actually two ships coming in, and they’re going to be docked along the bayfront between 3rd and 4th Street virtually the whole month of August.”
If you’ve seen the town’s tourism ads, you know that they did a study and found that many people are using their vacation days for things other than vacation, such as going to doctor’s appointments.
The mayor says vacation days are important.
“Don’t just use them for a day off or to do something that you’re not going to remember. Use them for something you’re going to remember, maybe for a lifetime, and take a trip to Ocean City.”
