RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The National Weather Service has confirmed two tornadoes in Virginia during a surprise wind, rain and hail storm through the central and southeastern parts of the state on Thursday.
Meteorologist Lyle Alexander with the Wakefield office of the weather service said Friday the tornadoes were confirmed in Prince George County and near Waverly. He said they delivered winds of up to 70 mph.
The tornado confirmation is based on damage consistent with a tornado, eyewitness accounts and radar data.
The storm swept unexpectedly through the greater Richmond area Thursday evening and followed Interstate 64 through the southeast and central portions of the state. Drenching rains and quarter-sized hail also lashed the region.
