SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) — Federal environmental regulators are reviewing the Superfund cleanup of a former city landfill in Suffolk.
The Environmental Protection Agency says the five-year review is a routine check-up to determine whether human health and the environment continue to be protected by remedies at the site.
The 67-acre landfill operated from 1967 to 1985. The property was added to the Superfund cleanup list in 1990 because of groundwater and soil contamination by pesticides disposed of at the site. It was removed from the Superfund list on Jan. 24, 1995.
The EPA plans to conduct similar reviews of Superfund sites across the Mid-Atlantic this year. They include reviewing maintenance records, inspecting cleanup technologies and determining whether any new regulatory requirements have been established since the EPA’s original cleanup decision.
