WASHINGTON – The District’s top cop has been named one of the most powerful women in Washington by Elle magazine.
Police Chief Cathy Lanier was named to the list of ten women that includes Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker and the COO of Politico.
The list also includes members of Congress, journalists and lobbyists. It leaves off Janet Yellen, the first woman to chair the Federal Reserve, who was sworn in Feb. 3.
Elle reports that Lanier became the first woman to lead the Metropolitan Police Department at age 39.
Lanier talks about her passion for saving stray animals and why she declined the job as chief when she was first offered the position.
One of the journalists on the list is Kim Kingsley, chief operating officer of POLITICO. Kingsley started her career at WTOP.
