British mechanic takes to road in souped-up kids classic (Video)

WSAHINGTON — Even if you don’t know the name, you know the Little Tikes Cozy Coupe – it’s the red car with the yellow roof that you can find in many suburban driveways.

Well, it’s not just for kids anymore.

According to the BBC (via the Huffington Post) John Bitmead, a mechanic in Oxfordshire, England, spent about $6,600 and 1,000 hours converting a Daewoo Matiz into an adult-sized version of the classic toy.

It has the gaudy look of the kids’ version – it even starts with the push of a big red button – but it’s no toy. It goes from zero to 60 in 17 seconds.

Bitmead told The Oxford Mail that he wants to tour England in the car to raise money for London’s Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.
