WASHINGTON – Women may want to get in line to live in the “Old Line State” after research says Maryland is the best state in the country for women to call home.
The Center for American Progress released research Wednesday detailing the best states for women to live and Maryland ranked No. 1. The state’s economic and leadership opportunities as well as the health of its female residents led to Maryland’s high ranking, according to the data.
Louisiana ranked as the worst state for women to live.
The Center for American Progress examined 36 factors that contribute to women’s well-being, all of which focus around economics, leadership and health. Each state received a grade and ranking based on the average of how the states ranked across the categories.
Helping Maryland’s ranking was its management opportunities for women. The state ranked first in the nation in terms of women reaching high-ranking positions in the public and private sectors. Louisiana, however, received a D- on overall leadership factors, according to the research.
Virginia ranked No. 23 in the nation.

- Vermont
- California
- Delaware
- Connecticut
- Colorado
- New York
- New Jersey
- Washington
