WASHINGTON – Authorities are searching for a shooter at the Washington Navy Yard in Southeast and say at least one person has been injured.
The U.S. Navy confirmed via Twitter at about 8:40 a.m. that a search for a shooter was underway. The Navy says three shots were fired at 8:20 a.m. at the headquarters of Naval Sea Systems Command, where about 3,000 people work.
Officials confirm one person has been injured. A “shelter in place” order has been issued for personnel at the Navy Yard.
The Washington Navy Yard says on its website that it’s the Navy’s oldest shore establishment. It’s home to the chief of Naval Operations and is also headquarters for the Naval Historical Center and numerous naval commands.
Naval Sea Systems Command is the largest of the Navy’s five system commands.
