WASHINGTON – Many plan on taking some type of summer vacation, but the big question is: When?
According to the Los Angeles Times, those wanting to travel soon should wait if they can.
The Times reports that the best times to take a trip by plane appear to be June and August, according to Priceline, a travel deals website. Priceline also reportedly says airline tickets will be up about 1 percent this year compared to last year.
Deals website Hotwire offers up a larger increase, saying domestic fares are currently up around 4 percent. But there is some hope.
“With more seats being added pre-summer, airfares are beginning to slow their increase and in some markets they have even come down,” Hotwire says. “If this trend continues, budget-conscious travelers could be able to find better deals than in 2012.”
Hotwire also reports that August is looking like the most affordable month to fly, and there are certain destinations that may offer the best lodging bargains.
Hotwire says Orlando and Fort Lauderdale in Florida could offer lower hotel prices to lure leisure travelers, thanks to a reduction in business visitors. Some hotels in D.C. also are offering discounts of up to 50 percent.
Meanwhile, the price for rental cars is up 7 percent this year compared to last, according to Hotwire, which recommends traveling on a Friday or Saturday for a better car deal.
