ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) – Maryland senators are expected to vote on a compromise measure allowing Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker to select the county’s next schools superintendent.
The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/YRqJih ) reports the bill would also allow the county executive to choose the chairman and vice chairman of a retooled school board. But the board would control the schools budget.
Baker sought a wider takeover of the schools but faced opposition.
Under the compromise, the superintendent would answer to the school board. But there would be limits on the board’s power. It would require a two-thirds vote of the board to override actions taken by the superintendent.
Baker would have authority to appoint two members of the school board. The County Council would appoint two more. Baker would choose the board’s leaders.
