WASHINGTON – The nation’s capital is the place to be for news, politics, history, and as it turns out, job seekers.
According to a new report cited by Forbes when it comes to holding promise for the unemployed, the District ranks second among the country’s 26 largest cities.
“There’s a really wide variety of business here in D.C.,” explains Chrissie Hendrickson of the recruiting agency TRAK Services.
“The government is here and with the government comes all kinds of opportunities that are associated with private sector companies that work for the government,” she says.
The study analyzes a number of factors including population growth, median income and unemployment.
D.C. ranked second for it’s 2.7 percent population growth, 10.2 percent unemployment rate, $43,993 median income and median rent of $1,823.
Hendrickson says the District is a transition hub, lending it a unique advantage over other areas in the country.
“There’s continually a shift of people moving in and moving out and I think that really makes the job openings more frequent,” she says.
Researchers place Austin, Texas at the top of their list for employee-friendly cities.
Detroit, with nearly 20 percent unemployment rate and a median income of $15,261, ranked dead last.
