Va. Hospital Center offers ‘full body tune-up’ for men

WASHINGTON – The Virginia Hospital Center is telling men to take care of their bodies like they take care of their cars.

In other words, don’t think of going to the doctor as a check-up, think of it as a tune-up.

The Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington will host a free men’s health event called “The Guys Full Body Tune- Up: A Men’s Health Event” from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Nov. 3.

A panel that includes doctors who specialize in internal medicine, cardiology and urology will discuss important health screenings and how men can stay in shape.

Internist Dr. Sam Pappas, one of the panelists, says men care for their cars, houses and cellphones better than they care for themselves. The goal of the event is to get men energized about their health, he says.

“What I try to do is tell them they should focus on a goal of trying to thrive rather than survive,” he says.

Pappas says the average middle-aged man should meet with an internist once a year to check basics such as blood pressure, weight, cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

He says it is important to get checked out before real problems occur and adds that men need to think about living better, not just living longer.

To register for the free event, call 703-558-6848 or visit Virginia Hospital Center’s website for more information. Participants will receive a complimentary breakfast and shaving travel bag.
