FALLS CHURCH, Va. – Several cars near a mosque were vandalized over the weekend, but police say the vandalism appears to be random.
More than two dozen cars had their windows smashed near the Dar al-Hairaj mosque. Fairfax County police say that cars in a large area were hit, and not just near the mosque. The vandalism extended from Lake Barcroft to Route 50.
Initially, some religious leaders thought the vandalism was motivated by religious hatred, but they’ve since changed their minds.
“As details developed throughout the day, I think opinion shifted on it,” says Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations. “But we’re also still concerned about widespread vandalism in the area of Falls Church. ”
No arrests have been made. CAIR is offering a $1,000 reward for any tips that lead to an arrest and conviction in the crime.
Police say the incident is still under investigation.
In an unrelated incident, a mosque in Harrisonburg, Va. was vandalized Friday.
