WASHINGTON – Rocky Run Middle School in Chantilly, Va. has returned to regular operations after two students were struck by what is believed to be BB gun pellets on Friday morning, Fairfax County police say.

Police believe “a group” of shooters was hiding in the adjacent woods when a 14- year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl and other students were returning to the school following “last day activities,” says Fairfax County Schools spokesman John Torre. The boy and girl were struck just before 10 a.m.

The girl sustained superficial injuries.

Police later caught the juveniles responsible, says Lucy Caldwell, Fairfax County police spokeswoman. They are not enrolled at Rocky Run.

“It’s the last day of school, it’s a little unnerving,” says Torre.

The school had issued a “secure the building status,” he says, which locks down the facility but teachers and staff are still able to move around.

An award ceremony and school dance scheduled for Friday night will still happen on schedule, Torre says.
