WASHINGTON — Having sex is safe for most people with heart disease, but a new study shows having extramarital sex with heart disease is a little more risky.
Only a modest number of patients with severe or unstable heart conditions should think twice about sexual activity, and having sex is linked with less than 1 percent of all heart attacks.
But, researchers at Baylor College reviewed more than 100 studies and more than 5,500 autopsy reports from cases of sudden death from cardiac arrest. They found only six-tenths of 1 percent occurred during sexual intercourse.
Of those who died, most were men, 75 percent of which were having sex outside of their marriage — with a younger partner, in most cases. In these instances, many of the men had eaten too much and had too much to drink before extramarital sexual activity.
