WASHINGTON – Eleven people have been displaced from two Falls Church townhouses after one of the homes exploded Sunday evening, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue officials say.
Fire investigators say an electrical spark from a refrigerator ignited about 12 containers of aerosol insect repellant, causing an explosion in the home at 2852 Pine Spring Road at about 7:15 p.m. The explosion severed several floor joists, pushed out a room wall and caused damage to an adjoining townhouse.
Officials say firefighters initially were called to the townhouse for a medical emergency, and the explosion occurred just prior to their arrival. One man was taken to an area hospital with a non-life-threatening injury caused by the explosion, and the Red Cross is assisting the displaced occupants.
Officials say a damage estimate is not available.
