New lanes for NOVA, new traffic pattern for the District

Dulles Toll Road closure

Beginning Tuesday morning, the eastbound Dulles Toll Road/267 at Interstate 495 will get its left lane back. HOT Lanes construction had blocked the lane earlier this year, and it’s going to reopen ahead of schedule. Before that happens, there will be a closure Monday night:

  • Monday between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. – EB Dulles Toll Rd/267 will be closed at the Beltway I-495
  • Eastbound traffic will be directed to exit onto I-495 south to Exit 46B, Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) north, and follow signage to the eastbound Dulles Toll Road

Nearby, the ramp from eastbound Interstate 66 to the Inner Loop of I-495 now enters the Beltway from the right instead of the left. There was already an accident at that merge this morning, but hopefully that wasn’t a result of the placement of the ramp.

NB 295 new traffic pattern

So hopefully you’ve heard about the new inbound 11th Street Bridge span being opened over the weekend, along with the new traffic pattern on northbound 295: Two lanes veer to the left for the 11th Street Bridge, and the right side now continues to NB 295.

Here’s where some folks are getting confused: The new signage for the 11th Street Bridge is labeled as Interstate 695. What’s up with that? Apparently, the Southeast-Southeast Freeway has always been called I-695 (which also happens to be the number for the Baltimore Beltway). Also, continuing onto northbound 295 is now technically an exit. One more weird little thing for us locals to get used to, and for out-of-towners to be confused by.

Stay tuned for Amy Freedman’s piece about the history of the Southeast-Southwest Freeway/I-695.
