HOUSTON (AP) — Quintell Quinn had a short touchdown run with 4:24 remaining and Texas Southern beat Grambling 24-17 on Saturday night.
Quinn’s touchdown run capped a 10-play, 75-yard drive for Texas Southern (3-4, 2-2 SWAC). The score answered a 10-play, 63-yard drive by Grambling (4-4, 1-3) that ended with Deljay Bailey’s 6-yard touchdown run and tied the game with 9:07 left.
Neither team scored until Texas Southern’s Chaunzavia Lewis returned a punt 36 yards, setting up a 6-yard touchdown run by Jace Wilson three plays later for a 7-0 lead 38 seconds into the second quarter.
Reed Harradine got Grambling on the scoreboard with a 38-yard field goal, but freshman backup Jordan Davis capped a nine-play, 99-yard drive with a 49-yard touchdown strike to Donald McKinney — on his only pass of the game — with 11 seconds remaining and Texas Southern led by 11 at halftime.
Grambling cut its deficit to 14-10 early in the third on a 31-yard touchdown run by Ke’travion Hargrove but missed a chance to get within a point when Harradine missed a 51-yard field goal at the 6:39 mark. Gustavo Romero was successful on a 46-yarder and Texas Southern took a 17-10 lead into the fourth.
Wilson completed 11 of 18 passes for 128 yards with one interception for Texas Southern. He led his team with 78 yards on 12 rushes. Quinn carried 11 times for 69 yards.
Bailey completed 7 of 12 passes for 70 yards for Grambling. Hargrove rushed for 73 yards on 13 carries.
