WASHINGTON — The Montgomery County school board adopted next year’s academic calendar during its business meeting Monday in Rockville.
The school year begins Monday, Aug. 29, 2016, and is slated to end Friday, June 16, 2017.
To accommodate the Sept. 12, 2016, professional day added by the board in November in order to give students the day off on Muslim holiday of Eid, students will now attend school on Oct. 21, 2016, which previously had been scheduled as a noninstructional day.
The school calendar is based on 184 instructional days for students (four more than the minimum required by the State of Maryland) and 193 duty days for teachers.
The school board also adopted a contingency plan that would extend the school year until June 23, 2017, depending on how many days would be needed to make up for lost instructional time due to emergency closings.
The school system will likely recommend an earlier start to the 2017-2018 school year. Board staff will study how the school system uses its professional days for staff.
The following considerations were approved in the 2016—2017 school year calendar:
- A student year of 184 instructional days, including four contingency days.
- A teacher year of 193 duty days, plus 16 hours of unscheduled professional time.
- Nine professional days with no school for students.
- Six early release days.
- Two early release days for all students on Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, and Friday, March 3, 2017, for planning.
- Two early release days for parent conferences in elementary and middle schools on Thursday, Nov. 10, and Friday, Nov. 11, 2016.
- Early release days on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2016 (the day before the Thanksgiving holiday) and Friday, June 16, 2017 (the last day of school for students).
