WASHINGTON — Search teams will return to Potomac River Thursday morning to look for a swimmer who went missing on Wednesday.
Crews suspended their hunt at 5 p.m. The swimmer, believed to be in his 20s, went missing near Great Falls in Montgomery County, Maryland.
“We hope that he made it to [the] shore line and maybe went back to his car,” Pete Piringer, a spokesman for the Montgomery County fire department, said Wednesday. “We hope that he’s OK somewhere.”
County Fire and Rescue was called to the area just south of Great Falls around 2:15 p.m. for reports of swimmers in the water. The other swimmer was able to get to shore.
Through Wednesday afternoon, crews from Maryland and Virginia had boats out on the water looking for the swimmer, whose name has not yet been released.
Park Police assisted with a search from a helicopter.
