WASHINGTON — A man was sentenced to 60 years in prison for raping a jogger in Montgomery County last year.
On Thursday, Judge Steven G. Salant, Circuit Court Judge for Montgomery County, sentenced Joaquin Orellana Torres, 25, to 60 years in prison — 30 years plus 30 years consecutive — after Torres pleaded guilty to one count of rape and one count of first degree sex-offense in March 2015.
Police say Torres raped a woman at knife point on Northwest Branch Trail — a popular trail in Montgomery County — in May 2014.
Police said the woman punched her attacker in the face on the trail near Oakview Drive, but she was not able to escape.
“Today’s sentence sends a strong message. Rape is a violent crime and will not be tolerated in our community. Sixty years is a long time to think about the pain, suffering and mental anguish he wrought upon a victim who was jogging along a path minding her own business. This defendant robbed her of her peace of mind and this is the price he will have to pay,” said John McCarthy, Montgomery County State’s Attorney, said in a news release.
