ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Students from Maryland’s four historically black colleges are scheduled to rally for a resolution to a federal lawsuit.
Supporters plan to rally Wednesday in Annapolis, Maryland. They are urging Gov. Larry Hogan and state legislators to settle a federal lawsuit that dates back to 2006.
It alleged the state has underfunded the institutions while developing programs at traditionally white schools that directly compete with and drain prospective students away from the African-American schools.
In 2013, a federal judge found that the state had maintained “a dual and segregated education system” that violated the Constitution.
Maryland’s four historically black colleges are Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Morgan State University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
