Football death lawsuit involving Md. player may be settled

WASHINGTON — A lawsuit filed against the NCAA and football coaches over the death of a Frostburg State University football player may be nearing a settlement.

NBC Washington, WTOP’s television news partner, obtained records that point to a recommended settlement amount to be paid by the state of Maryland.

Derek Sheely, 22, died of a head injury in August 2011 after he collapsed during football practice at Frostburg.

His family has sued the university, some coaches, the company that made the helmet Sheely wore and college sports’ governing body, the NCAA.

A trial was scheduled to begin in May, but a Montgomery County judge postponed it — citing a possible settlement.

No one has commented on the size of the possible settlement. But NBC Washington reports that Maryland’s Attorney General has formally recommended contributing $50,000 on behalf of the state’s education system.

An official with the Maryland Attorney General’s office confirmed its proposed settlement amount and the July 26 meeting. An attorney for Sheely’s family declined to comment. The NCAA did not return multiple requests for comment.
