WASHINGTON — Loudoun County and Dominion Virginia Power have agreed on the general path for a new transmission line that will provide power to a data center near Dulles International Airport.
In documents filed with the Virginia State Corporation Commission Wednesday, Dominion agreed to an alternative path suggested by the county, known as Alternative 6. That path will take the transmission line across the Yardley Ridge property and down Virginia Route 606 to U.S. 50. It would parallel the highway to Poland Road.
In a statement to WTOP, Dominion said that the county’s acquisition of property south of the intersection of U.S. 50 and Route 606 — where the county hopes to one day see an interchange built — made the power company’s preferred routes infeasible.
Both the county and Dominion said that more details need to be resolved before the path of the overhead transmission line could be finalized.
Preliminary plans would have routed the 110-foot-high transmission line along U.S. 50 between Northstar Boulevard and Virginia Route 606 in the South Riding area. County officials worried that the route would have hindered development in the area. Also noted as a concern was the risk to helicopters landing at a nearby hospital.
Loudoun County residents have packed meetings during the past year to voice concerns about the overhead line.
