EARLIER July 9, 2015 6:07 a.m.: WASHINGTON — A former FBI agent who worked in D.C. will be sentenced Thursday in federal court for stealing heroin from bags of evidence and using the drugs.
Matthew Lowry pleaded guilty in March to 64 charges. He told the media his heroin addiction began with prescription painkillers that he was taking for a medical condition.
“I just want to apologize and say that I was wrong for my actions,” Lowry said.
Lowry’s sentencing hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. in D.C. District Court.
According to documents obtained by The Washington Post, prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office will ask for seven to nine years in prison for Lowry. They say his actions destroyed drug cases, leading to charges being dismissed against 28 people.
The Post reports Lowry’s defense attorney plans to ask for home detention, arguing the crimes were motivated not by greed but by his addiction.
Lowry was caught in September with open evidence bags of heroin in his car. He admitted he stole heroin over a 14-month period, taking it from evidence bags and covering up his crimes by replacing the drugs with other substances.
