WASHINGTON — Marriage doesn’t work for millennials — that’s the opinion of one columnist for Asbury Park Press in New Jersey.
Anthony D’Ambrosio’s recent column “5 reasons we can’t handle marriage anymore” caused quite a social media stir from folks who thought this piece was full of whining, and others who say he doesn’t have enough real-world experience to talk about a long-haul marriage.
Thirty-year-old D’Ambrosio was married in 2012. He’s divorced now.
While he still believes in matrimony he says the society we live in makes it difficult.
He writes one barrier to millennial marriage boils down to dollars and cents.
“I feel like the ability to get out of school and find a good job is difficult. I think the price of education these days is astronomical. When you think about over $200,000 for an education, that’s absolutely insane to think about. When these kids get out of school–what are they making 30-40 thousand dollars. And to be able to pay back those student loans on top of building a relationship, living life, buying a home, having a baby, dealing with all of the expenses of life, it’s foolish to believe that doesn’t cause a strain on a relationship.”
D’Ambrosio says he knows some folks in previous generations struggled with finances, but those problems didn’t loom as large as they do today, because prices for these things have gone up, while incomes have not.
D’Ambrosio also writes that an almost non-existent sex life, lack of communication skills, desire for attention from strangers instead of a desire for love, and the imbalance of inviting social media into life’s every nook and cranny can be detrimental to marital relationships.
