Central Union Mission
Central Union Mission, a faith-based nonprofit organization, serves hungry, homeless and hurting people in the metro Washington area.
Central Union Mission has stood as a beacon of compassion for over 140 years, serving those in need with dignity, hope, and unwavering care. What began as a mission to care for homeless veterans returning from the Civil War has grown into a regionwide ministry with five separate locations in the DC metropolitan area, each meeting people in their hardest moments and walking with them toward restoration.
Services include:
- Emergency shelter with hot meals, showers, clean clothing, and case management
- Residential recovery programs for men overcoming addiction and life-controlling challenges
- Free groceries, clothing, and essential household items for neighbors in need
- Workforce development through paid training and career coaching
- Education and training such as GED preparation, ESL classes, computer skills, and job readiness
- Life skills support including parenting classes, budgeting help, and practical workshops
- Seasonal support programs providing summer camp, Christmas gifts, and school supplies for children
- Legal aid and social services with counseling and case management
- Senior services with monthly fellowship and support offered in English and Spanish
- Summer camp experiences for 400 under-resourced children each year
Impact
Washington, DC, has one of the nation’s largest homeless populations. But last year with the support of individuals, corporations and churches, Central Union provided:
- 160,031 hot meals
- 57,422 nights of shelter
- 2,782 counseling sessions
