Man who aided Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan is sentenced

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Dutch-Turkish man has been sentenced to over seven years in prison for providing material support to the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, a designated foreign terrorist organization.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia said in a statement that 58-year-old Irfan Demirtas was sentenced Tuesday. Demirtas had pleaded guilty in September in connection with the case.

Prosecutors say Demirtas was charged in a 2011 sealed indictment related to actions between 2006 and 2008 when he was a Netherlands resident and an IMU fundraiser. Prosecutors say the militant Islamic group formed in 1991 aims to overthrow Uzbekistan’s government and create an Islamic state.

Demirtas was arrested in Germany in 2015 and extradited to the U.S.

His attorneys didn’t immediately return an emailed request for comment late Tuesday.
