WASHINGTON — The 100,000 Opportunities Initiative, an employer-led coalition backed by some of the nation’s largest companies, is bringing its Hiring Fair and Forum to D.C. on September 20.
The event is specifically for 16- to 24-year-olds who are not working or not in school.
An estimated 4.9 million 16- to 24-year-olds in the U.S. are neither in school nor working, and backers of the initiative say it’s a chance for them to bridge the opportunity divide.
There will be dozens of companies on-site hiring. They range from corporate names like EY (formerly Ernst and Young) and Microsoft to hospitality companies like Starbucks, Five Guys and Hilton.
“About 30 different types of employers will be at this event, both local and national. They’re going to be conducting over 1,800 interviews with the intention of making on-the-spot job offers,” Marie Davis, executive director of the 100,000 Opportunities Initiative, told WTOP.
The event is more than just a job fair. Job-seekers will have access to dozens of employment, educational and social services experts.
“Resources on child care. Transportation resources that will make it easier for them to get to work. There will be organizations there representing housing opportunities,” Davis said.
The event will also include one-on-one resume and interview coaching plus opportunities for civic engagement like voter registration and national service.
The 100,0000 Opportunities job fair runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 20 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in D.C. The event is free and open to all 16- to 24-year-olds who are not currently working or in school.
