U Street ‘Dog Days’ sidewalk festival set for this weekend

WASHINGTON — More than 100 businesses along D.C.’s U Street corridor will take part in this year’s Dog Days Sidewalk Festival Aug. 5 and Aug. 6.

Called the largest sidewalk sale in the District, the festival covers 25 blocks in and around the U Street corridor, stretching from 7th Street to 17th in Northwest.

This is the 18th year for the Dog Days Festival, which is expected to attract more than 15,000 people.

The Dog Days Sidewalk Festival was founded in 2000 by 14th Street retailer Home Rule, and has grown from a one-block sidewalk sale to now include all of 14th Street between Thomas Circle and Florida Avenue and U Street from 7th Street to 17th Street.

The MidCity BID Exploratory Committee, which is seeking to form a business improvement district for the neighborhood, is sponsoring the event for the second year.

“We are always seeking opportunities to showcase the diversity of our neighborhood,” said Diane Gross, owner of Cork Wine Bar and chair of the MidCity BID Exploratory Committee.

“The Dog Days festival shows the power we have when working together, and the types of events a BID can do to bring more visibility and success to the neighborhood,” she said.

You can see a list of participating stores on the Dog Days website.
