WASHINGTON — You’ll find a little seat back reading material on your next Amtrak trip.
Amtrak has launched a new, onboard magazine called “The National.” The monthly publication is now available on all Amtrak trains and includes features on the personalities, culture and destinations along Amtrak’s routes.
While the northeast corridor between D.C. and Boston is, by far, the carrier’s busiest route, Amtrak has more than 500 destinations in 46 states.
Amtrak hired New York-based publisher Ink to produce its onboard magazine. Ink specializes in travel-related publications, and its magazines include American Airlines’ “American Way” in-flight magazine.
The inaugural issue of “The National” includes a feature on the new National Museum of African American History and Culture in D.C.
“’The National’ is an inspired publication that celebrates American culture,” said Jordan Heller, “The National’s” editor-in-chief. “Railways are integral to shaping our national identity and ‘America’s Railroad’ is the perfect platform for a contemporary magazine.”
Regular features will include “Rail Life” vignettes featuring people, places and experiences across the country; “Made in America” profiles featuring American companies; “The National Conversation” called a Pop Culture Q&A; “Next Stop,” in-depth features on American culture and history; and “Photography Highlight,” with picture-driven documentaries of Amtrak train travel.
The magazine is free.
